2023 Long Term Programs

The Gatherer's Program: Foraging, Herbal Medicine, & Basketry

Learn from the world of plants through hands on connections and experience. Sarah and several talent guest instructors will guide you through building willow and black ash gathering baskets and then use them to gather wild edibles and medicines.ย  Herbalism and foraging, and cordage will round out this 8 month, one weekend a month course.

Adult Programs

Roots offers year round programs in wilderness self reliance and survival as well as traditional crafts and skills such as building bows and arrows, basketry, flint knapping(stone tools), fiber arts, and blacksmithing. We also offer naturalist programs such as Wildlife Tracking and Birding.ย  Our courses are from one day to one class a month for 9 months.

Children's Programs

Roots has a variety of programs for children year round. We have a couple Summer Day Camps, a school year one day a week homeschool program, and weekend classes such as Children’s Bow Making. We also have family events that are all ages such as the Family Survival Weekend and the Roots Rendezvous.

Custom Programs

Roots is happy to help you design the course that works for your needs as an individual or to teach at your school or organization. Sky is the limit!

Origins Long Term Wilderness Skills

The Origins Program runs from April-Oct and covers skills from the vast world of long term stone age and traditional skills. Bow and arrow making, stone tools, foraging and weaving, hunting and tracking, bone and soapstone carving, and shelter building will all lead to a week of stone age living on the land putting the skills to use.

Traditional Bow Hunting Intensive

Build your own wooden bow and arrows from natural materials and learn to hunt your own food. Getting into hunting, especially bow hunting can seem a daunting goal. This course is designed to meet many skill and experience levels as we take you through tracking, scouting, hunt planning and tactics, conservation plots, camouflage, stalking, bow and arrow building, archery, and more.

Online Academy

We have begun offering onine training in the form of our Patreon, custom Zoom classes, as well as video Master Classes produced in house here at Roots.

Teen Programs

Every year we pick a theme and run a week long overnight based on those skills. From building your own wooden bow, to survival skills, to stealth and awareness, to this summers Teen Wilderness Exploration And Leadership Program. Also, as always teens are welcome to join in on all ages events such as the All Ages Fire Class and the Roots Rendezvous.

Family Programs

From three day gatherings like the ROOTS Rendezvous to one night overnights and weekend skills classes, Roots has several offerings for getting the whole family involved.

Yesterday I noticed American Yew being browsed by white tailed deer. I have to say after 20+ years of paying attention to what these animals eat I still constantly add new things to the list. Hundreds and hundreds of herbs, shrubs, and trees for them to browse.

Ash here holding a basket I wove from catsclaw vine carrying guava fruits. Inspired by the generosity of @sandra.kehoe.5 giving Ash baskets she wove and @mattcorradino `s kid, Ilee, being so cool as well as generous with Ash, this is now her basket to bring to the farmers market or fill with fruits or art supplies or iguanas -who knows! baskets always seem to find their place.

learned a bit about basket hoop vine, did a hex weave that I haven`t done for a decade and makes my brain work hard to turn up along with Carmen @caribbean_earth_skills giving pointers on where the corners are, and star fruit/carambola are just going off right now.

Brad builds a bow, Sarah weaves a quiver and we both make a few arrows for her to play with.

Ash is just learning how to string an arrow, but for those of you who love to shoot there is an extensive 3d target range through the woods here at Mount Victory that is pretty awesome.

Ah, look at these lovely people who were a part of the course last year who wove beautiful baskets and gathered all sorts of plentiful foods.

We will be running a course with them December 4th - 9th.
This island is beautiful! Matt and Carmen are so knowledgeable with a love and respect for the land.

You can choose your own focus and take the path of basketry and foraging or tropical fishing.
