Two Locations for Children!

Roots now has two locations for children's programs in Plainfield, and our home base in Corinth, Vermont. We understand that this can cause some confusion so please ask questions if you are unclear as to where a program is taking place. We are very excited to be able to reach more children in the Upper Valley and Orange Country ares while at the same time providing the same high quality to students in the Central Vermont area.

Basic Gear for Classes

  • Note Book and Pen
  • Weather appropriate clothing and footwear. This includes rain gear, and clothing that can get wet and/or dirty.
  • Water bottle; One liter at least.
  • A bandana, or piece of fabric that can act as a blindfold

  • A insulate pad, therma-rest, or camping pad to elevate you off of the ground while you sleep
  • Sleeping bag that is rated to at least 40 degrees
  • A sturdy back pack to hold your belongings. To make sure your belongings stay dry, we recommend lining your bag with a plastic trash bag
  • Extra layers
  • Extra Socks
  • Mug or thermos
  • Toiletries
  • Plate, bowl, and utensils. Please don't forget this.

Many layers of clothing keep you warm and can be adjusted to adapt to either the weather and/or activity as opposed to one thick layer.

A carving knife is a good item to have on hand for classes.  If you don't own one and want to, we would recommend a 2”-5” blade, non-folding, and sharp.  We will have knives to borrow for the duration of the class.  If you would like to purchase one from us, we might have some Frost/Mora of Sweden knives for sale.
Please pack in a way that allows you to comfortably carry your gear to your campsite. When packing, make sure that you take care of your basic needs so as to focus on the class.  Furthermore, small comfort items such as snacks, extra extra socks, and so on can be the needed thing.

What you may want to bring:

  • Snacks
  • A towel and bathing suit, if during the summer months
  • Something to sit on when the ground is wet or covered in snow
  • If you bring insect repellent, we ask that it is DEET free. We have natural alternatives.

Do NOT bring the following to any Roots School Classes:

  • Fire Arms
  • Drugs
  • Alcohol
  • Fire works
  • Pets

For classes that are not listed as an overnight, please bring your lunch with you for the day.

For overnight classes, meals are provided from the start of the class to the end.  We seek to provide high quality food and full, well rounded meals.  Nearly all of the food we cook is local and/or organic, and prepared to be delicious.   Please make us aware of any special food needs in advance of the class when registering.  We can accommodate vegetarian, gluten free, egg free, pork free, and dairy free diets.  If you have other unique or intensive dietary restrictions, we may not be able to accommodate you, and would recommend you to both contact us and plan on bringing yourself extra food. We always recommend to all students to bring snacks to help keep you comfortable, focused, and happy with your brain and body sated.

Several Roots programs involving camping or camp outs.

For younger children these can be an awesome rite of passage, and sometimes a bit daunting. It is always 100% up to you child if they camp out or not, with the exception of our teen programs which mostly require camping for the program to work. We are experienced at working with children to overcome the fears that may come with camping out. In the rare case that a child is very upset and inconsolable, we may call you to come and pick them up. Sometimes just talking to the parent on the phone to be reassured is all that is needed, and sometimes kids decide that they need to go home and there is nothing we can say or do to change it. Mostly the kids are tired from a long day at Roots and fall asleep early so they can wake us up at dawn!

General gear associated to camping is listed in the Gear section above, however please check the confirmation letter you receive when you register your child for a course for the most accurate gear list for that program.

The deposit is applied toward the cost of the course; the remaining balance will be due on the first day of the class. We accept cash, traveler’s checks, checks, and money orders. Please make checks payable to Roots School LLC. We currently accept credit cards online only.   For long term courses, payment plans are available.  If you choose to withdraw from a long term course you are still responsible for the full payment.

Registration is done online with payment in order to enroll in the course. You may also download and fill out a paper registration and send it with the course deposit to: 192 Bear Notch Rd, Bradford, VT 05033 (this is not our physical address).
