Discover and begin to unlock nature’s mysteries with a full day per week in VT’s woodlands. The Roots School Jumping Mouse program facilitates a deep connection with the land and a practical understanding of key concepts of ecology. Children learn though games, wildlife tracking, stories, “expeditions”, wilderness survival skills, group initiative challenges, and sensory awareness/direct observation. Students gain physical skills, such as the safe and effective use of tools, and the harvest, preparation and use of nature’s materials in order to make useful and beautiful projects from the land. Children also develop awareness skills, such as critical observation and synthesis of sensory information. The Jumping Mouse program curriculum emphasizes direct interaction and exploration of the natural world, creative problem-solving, teamwork, playful exploration, as well as journaling, drawing, and storytelling as tools for integrating lessons and experiences.
